 English 10A

Students will read various short stories and poems in addition to at least one class novel.  I will introduce the concept of reading through lenses.  Students will learn to consider the Metacognitive functions of comprehension (Reading Strategies and their use), Close and Critical Reading Questions (four basic questions that apply to ANYTHING a person wishes to understand), and the Elements of Fiction and Poetry.  Students will record their thoughts in the margins of some reading assignments to indicate their levels of engagement and understanding.

Each child will write a short story and a literary analysis based on a theme of something read this trimester.  These two assignments are mandatory for credit in the class.  Students must master the Essay Architect structure.  Also, ACT English practice will focus on Capitalization, Punctuation, and Sentence Structure.

Finally, students are required to read independently.  Class short stories and novels do not meet this requirement.
