GRAND BLANC, MI — The Lapeer Lightning girls soccer team made history Wednesday night (May 13), capturing their first-ever Saginaw Valley League (SVL) championship with a thrilling 1-0 victory over Grand Blanc at the Bobcats' home stadium.
Lapeer set the tempo early, executing an aggressive high press that pinned Grand Blanc deep into their own defensive zone. The Lightning dominated first-half possession, creating multiple scoring opportunities and outshooting the Bobcats 5-1 in the opening periods of play.
The game’s decisive moment came with just four minutes remaining in the first half. Lapeer earned a free kick from 30 yards out, executed by Rachel Bopra. Bopra’s powerful strike rattled directly off the crossbar, but Erin King reacted instantly to head the rebound past the Grand Blanc goalkeeper into the back of the net.
Grand Blanc shifted momentum in the second half, pushing numbers forward and intensifying their attack in pursuit of an equalizer. However, the Lapeer defensive unit—anchored by Averie Schons, Erin King, Avery Fidler, and Maecyn Kress—remained disciplined under heavy pressure.
Goalkeeper Madison White delivered a stellar performance to preserve the lead, making seven crucial saves over the course of the match to secure her 11th shutout of the season and seal the historic championship victory.
